Southern Affairs is a blog about Latin American history and the environment, offering news and analysis of current events, historical essays, and book reviews about topics of regional and global interest. The site is published by N. H. Gill and serves as a digital workspace for research projects, drafts, and other lines of flight.
I am a 2020-2021 Fulbright-Hays scholar in Ecuador and visiting associate research professor at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, working on my doctoral dissertation on changing human-environment relationships and labor in the Andes.
I worked in South America for eleven years as a journalist, including as a reporter in Chile and as bureau chief in Ecuador for Bloomberg News, covering governments, economies, and daily life across Latin America. My work has been published by Bloomberg, Businessweek, Bloomberg Markets Magazine, BBC, National Public Radio, United Press International, Mediato, and syndicated by major news agencies in English and Spanish.
