Southern Affairs is a Latin American history blog, offering news and analysis of current events, historical essays, and book reviews about the region. It is published by N. H. Gill, a journalist and doctoral student in Latin American history at UNC Chapel Hill in North Carolina.
My current research explores the intersection of environmental change and the economy in the Ecuadorian Andes in the longue durée. I am a 2020 Fulbright-Hays scholar in Ecuador and an associate investigator at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito.
I previously worked as a reporter for Bloomberg News in the Andes, covering governments, economies, and markets across Latin America for eight years. My work has been published by Bloomberg, the BBC, United Press International, NPR, and distributed by major news agencies in English and Spanish-language press.
